While I may still be slumping, this little book was a whole experience! The illustrations were magical, the stories were entertaining and provided a bit of Cardan backstory, and it was fun to revisit these characters, even if just for a little bit. So I was hesitant to jump into this one, but I needed something to break my slump. I usually just eel unsatisfied with them. I almost never read novellas or short stories. This tale includes delicious details of life before The Cruel Prince, an adventure beyond The Queen of Nothing, and familiar moments from The Folk of the Air trilogy, told wholly from Cardan’s perspective. #1 New York Times bestselling author, Holly Black reveals a deeper look into the dramatic life of Elfhame’s enigmatic high king, Cardan. Once upon a time, there was a boy with a wicked tongue.īefore he was a cruel prince or a wicked king, he was a faerie child with a heart of stone.

What follows is a gripping tale of intrigue, romance and - of course - iconic bending battles. When Kyoshi, who is actually considered a rather unskilled earthbender, begins to manifest a similar connection, the estate is thrown into chaos. When the first novel begins, Kyoshi is a mere servant at the estate of Avatar Yun, an earthbending prodigy widely believed to be the Avatar due to an otherwise unexplainable connection to the spirit of the previous Avatar. “The Rise of Kyoshi” (2019) and “The Shadow of Kyoshi” (2020) follow fan-favorite character Avatar Kyoshi in her teenage years as she struggles to establish herself as the Avatar. Though the upcoming live-action Netflix show seems to be in shambles, with series co-creators Michael Dante DiMartio and Bryan Konietzko having stepped down from the project in August, there is at least one other avenue for fans hungry for more “Avatar” content: the “Kyoshi” novel duology, written by F.C. The “Avatar: The Last Airbender” universe has always felt bigger than just the TV show and its sequel series “The Legend of Korra.” Given the renewed interest in the franchise generated by the series’ return to Netflix, now seems like the perfect time for Viacom to produce more content in the “Avatar” universe. Surfacing is about a young woman searching for her father. But if there’s another book by Margaret Atwood that inspired me, it’s Surfacing. It’s a wonderful story, I can’t say enough good things about it. I wasn’t thinking of The Handmaid’s Tale at all, I read it so long ago. How much did the work of these two authors inspire you while writing your series? The Chemical Garden contains elements reminiscent of both The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. DeStefano talked with PW about the underlying themes of the Chemical Garden trilogy, which concludes this month with Sever (Simon & Schuster), and introduced her new series for YA readers, The Internment Chronicles, scheduled to launch in spring 2014. After being kidnapped and sold to a wealthy physician, 16-year-old Rhine becomes enmeshed in a race to find a cure for the virus that is striking down adults in their 20s. Lauren DeStefano’s Chemical Garden trilogy of dystopian novels for YA readers paints a harrowing portrait of the unintended and tragic consequences of modern society’s relentless pursuit of perfection. It's not without pitfalls, however: the amount of Scripture swapping that goes on between Darcy and Sam may feel a bit awkward to all but the most hardcore evangelical reader, as will numerous italicized conversations with God. The story is chock-full of fresh details, fine descriptions and unexpected plot twists. Henderson has conquered a problem she had with heavy dialogue in previous novels and also cut down on the dense military jargon without losing the flavor of the series. Darcy is admirably cast as a strong, career-minded, middle-aged woman-a combination that is rare in CBA novels. There's a bounty on Darcy's head, however, and the suspense builds as she eludes her attackers throughout the novel. When current events pull her back into active duty, her path crosses that of Chief Petty Officer and Navy SEAL Sam Houston, aka "Cougar." Their romance, while inevitable, is endearing Sam has "always prayed to meet an interesting woman," and he finds one in Darcy. James, aka "Hound Dog," is a strong yet vulnerable retired top-notch spy for the CIA. This absorbing third entry in Henderson's Uncommon Heroes series exemplifies why Henderson, a wildly successful CBA novelist, is dominating this market's paperback fiction bestseller list.
